Root Canals
When you hear or read “root canal”, I’m sure those words evoke some sort of uncomfortable feeling. That is totally normal and understandable! The thought of such a procedure and the feelings associated with them can be daunting. However, it’s important to know that a root canal procedure is a very safe and minimally uncomfortable way to preserve a natural tooth that may otherwise need to be removed.
What is a Root Canal?
A tooth contains a chamber and canals within its root system that contains blood vessels and nerves. If damage through trauma or deep cavities destroys or damages this system, that could lead to inflammation, infection, swelling within the canals. This pressure caused by swelling at the roots is the commonly known “throbbing toothache” that could keep you up at night.
A root canal procedure serves to clean, disinfect, and fill in this space that could harbor more bacteria if kept unchecked. Bringing down the inflammation and infection in order to restore function of the tooth are the goals!
Further Treatment
Following treatment, additional procedures may be required depending on which tooth was treated. For back teeth that take the majority of your biting forces every day, these teeth will need a core filling to replace lost inner tooth structure from the procedure and/or cavity, as well as a crown to replace lost outer structure. This will help preserve the tooth for long term use and prevent accidental fractures.
